Fig is a fruit that grows on trees. The fig tree has been cultivated since ancient times and the trees are also used ornamental purposes. Fig trees grow in dry and sunny places, and it is native to the Aegean, Mediterranean and Middle East.

It has a place even in holy scripture with its meaty fruit and honey like flavour. It has managed to become one of the most loved fruits throughout human history and it is one of the most popular imported dried fruits of all time.

The homeland of the fig is Turkey, from where it spread to Syria, Palestine and then to the Middle East. Figs are a fruits that require special fertilization and distinctive drying conditions. Therefore, the places where it grows are limited.

Turkey has been the World’s largest fig producer for many years. One in four figs grown in the world reaches the tables from a territory of Turkey. Aydın is the fig centre of Turkey, which is likened to a city where “oil (fat) flows from the mountains and honey flows from the plains”. Aydın which covers about 60 percent of the production is followed by Izmir and Bursa.
